CE Machinery Directive

The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC applies to machinery and provides the harmonisation of the relevant health and safety requirements for machinery, through a combination of both mandatory and voluntary harmonised standards.

A machine is defined in the Directive as "an assembly, fitted with or intended to be fitted with a drive system other than directly applied human or animal effort, consisting of linked parts or components, at least one of which moves and are joined together for a specific application”.

There are exclusions such as military equipment, machines which are already covered by other, more specific, directives and some equipment which falls within the scope of the Low Voltage Directive. The Regulations are enforced in the UK by the Health and Safety Executive for machinery used in the workplace.

EN 60204-1

This covers the Safety of Machinery - Electrical Equipment of Machines - General Requirements.

In addition to EN 60204-1 we work in accordance with the Low voltage Directive, 20006/95/EC and the EMC-Directive, 2004/108/EC.

Your legal responsibility

• ensure plant and machinery are safe and that safe systems of work are set and followed;
• give workers the information, instruction, training and supervision necessary for their health and safety;

There are key pieces of legislation covering work equipment and some of the guidance that is available.

Legislation governs both the design, construction and supply of work equipment (SUPPLY), and how work equipment is selected, provided, used, and maintained (USE & MAINTENANCE) to ensure that risks to workers health and safety are properly controlled.

Generally, work equipment is any equipment which is used by an employee at work. Therefore the range of equipment is extremely wide and could cover everything from a spanner to a tower crane.
